Tesla's registered Cybercabs in Texas rise to 319 · autonomy
Texas's autonomous vehicle registration list shows 739 authorized vehicles under Tesla Robotaxi, LLC. Of these, 150 Cybercabs were added this time, taking the Cybercab registration count from 169 to 319. The increase reported at the start of the month was from 45 to 169. Tesla's official account then reposted a photo of four gold Cybercabs driving together, with only the line "Floodgates are opening", and no mention of cities, fleet size or service changes. The registration count reflects authorization, not vehicles carrying passengers: Dallas riders are still being picked up by Model Y vehicles. The same week, rider David Moss posted that the car he was in circled a pickup-point parking lot for 7 minutes unable to find the exit; after customer service parked it remotely, it took another 7 minutes to restart FSD. NHTSA has ordered Tesla to respond under oath by October 30 on how a vehicle with no steering wheel or pedals is determined to comply with federal safety standards. Walmart warehouse automation hits snags: small robots can't move large items and break down often · industrial
The Wall Street Journal reports that Walmart brought in several robotics companies and ultimately chose small wheeled robots for a dozen-plus warehouses. These robots still can't retrieve large, heavy goods such as full bags of dog food, and they often malfunction. Citing Walmart insiders, the report says pay for the mechanical and electrical engineers hired by automated warehouses has already exceeded total wages for non-technical warehouse workers. Management's line is that automation will reduce warehouse workers, with some moving into managing and repairing robots. Interact Analysis analyst Rueben Scriven calls automation spending among retailers an "arms race". Kroger, whose earlier investment in an automated fulfillment network did not pay off, wrote down $2.6 billion. Source: Futurism source
